Auburn to Atlanta

Our first stop today was Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. While there were no students because the term is over, the University was still open. Of course there weren’t that many people around, but we took a nice walking tour of the University. It’s a very beautiful campus.  The bookstore was open, so we went in and looked around; Cecelia got a sweatshirt.  The folks in this town are quite proud of their tigers. It was fun to see.

We walked all the way across campus to Toomer’s Corner, just across the street from the campus, where we had to have their famous lemonade.

Auburn is a fairly small Southern town, and with the absence of students it was fairly quiet. We walked back to the car and drove over to their athletic departments, looking for the softball complex. When we found it we drove up so Emma could get a picture of the field over the fence. Just at that moment the groundskeeper asked if we wanted to walk onto the field and take a look around. Well of course we did.  Good ol’ Southern hospitality at its best.

Not too far from Auburn is Tuskegee, Alabama ... home of the Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site.  It is located at the original airfield where these individuals trained to fly.

From tuskegeeairmen.com :
"Tuskegee Airmen" refers to the men and women, African-Americans and Caucasians, who were involved in the so-called "Tuskegee Experience", the Army Air Corps program to train African Americans to fly and maintain combat aircraft. The Tuskegee Airmen included pilots, navigators, bombardiers, maintenance and support staff, instructors, and all the personnel who kept the planes in the air.”

They’ve done a fabulous job of putting together displays and explaining the interesting history of the Airmen, including all of the support individuals that helped them be successful.

Our day ended in downtown Atlanta, where we will spend the night. After many suggestions we decide to go to Mary Mac’s Tea Room. It just might be the best meal that we’ve had so far, and quite possibly in Jim’s opinion, the best meal we might have for the rest of the week. Fried chicken, chicken fried steak, turnip greens, vegetable and cheese soufflĂ©, macaroni and cheese, fried okra, fried green tomatoes, and peach cobbler for dessert.
