We woke up to overcast skies and a brisk 50 degrees, but not bad for December. After a quick continental breakfast at the hotel we did some snack and lunch shopping at Walmart, next door. We are going to have at least one restaurant meal a day, but we like to graze our way on a road trip and eat as economically as possible for breakfast and lunch. With bread, brie, salami and junk food in tow we got on the road headed to Montgomery, Alabama.

It didn’t disappoint, but the banana pudding for dessert was the clincher. Delish!

We didn’t get all that far before deciding to stop at an alligator ranch and fan boat tour operator near Biloxi, Mississippi. Yes, super touristy, but come on, we’re on the Gulf coast, bayou country ... why not tour the swamp? It was well worth it, and half the price than doing it in/near New Orleans. Since it’s December, and therefore fairly cool, the gators aren’t too active. They were very up front about that and told us before buying our tickets. But the boat ride alone was worth it. And we did see a couple of wild gators.
The skies had cleared and the sun was shining by the time we set sail; their farm gators started moving about when the sun came out. It was really a fun stop.
After our “gatorland” adventure we set off again for Montgomery. In Montgomery we visited the The Legacy Museum: From Enslavement to Mass Incarceration and the The National Memorial for Peace and Justice. Very moving. Check out their website here: https://museumandmemorial.eji.org/
We ended the day with dinner at Dreamland BBQ, a must-do suggested by friends and the museum folks.
