We made our way over the long bridge across Lake Pontchartrain to New Orleans this morning, but instead of heading right into the city center, we decided to explore the outskirts a little bit. So glad we did because we ended up happening upon the Chalmette Battlefield and National Cemetary. It is the location of a very important battle of the War of 1812.

After that we headed into the city to get to our hotel. It was about 11:30 by this time, so we needed a little bite to eat. As we entered the “suburbs,” we began looking for a cheap place to find some food. Jim really wanted gumbo. We stumbled upon a neighborhood Chinese/Cajun food restaurant. Sounds funny, but the gumbo was pretty good.

After a little more driving, we finally arrived at our hotel. While the girls got checked in and rested a little, Jim returned the rental car to the airport. At 2:30, we took a short walk to one of our most anticipated stops ... a special, private tour of a research lab at Tulane Medical School. Jim met Dr. Janet Zadina as part of his job. She did her research at Tulane and her husband, Dr. James Zadina, is currently a researcher there. When she heard we were coming to New Orleans, she graciously offered to host us and have her husband show us his lab. It was such great insight into a real working lab and gave all of us, especially the girls, a great look at what they could do if they want to someday.

Then ... as if they hadn’t gone out of their way enough, they showed us a beautiful hotel all decorated for the holidays in the area AND treated us to pizza. We had such a great time with them and can’t really thank them enough.

Our hotel is just adjacent to the area known as the French Quarter. After dinner we decided to walk around and get a feel for the historic neighborhood. We walked about 1/2 mile to the famous Café du Monde to get their famous powdered sugar coated beignets.

The best way to make sure you sleep well is get plenty of exercise. We walked several miles today so we decided to save Bourbon St. and other sites for tomorrow.

Not only did we get a great tour, Dr. Zadina’s research is making amazing strides in the realm of pain relief. Take a look at this article: https://www.google.com/amp/s/articles.nola.com/science/index.ssf/2016/01/tulane_drug_opioid_addiction.amp
